On a recent tour of schools in Migori, Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha expressed optimism about reopening schools before 2021, a timeline he initially set for January 2021.
According to Magoha, the decision to reconsider the reopening date is based on the decline in new COVID-19 cases, which has led to a flattening of the infection curve.
Magoha emphasized that the Ministry of Education will only allow schools to reopen if it is confident that students will be safe upon their return.
‘As government, our’s has been to open schools like yesterday. Should the situation look promising, we are ready to open the learning institutions in the interest of our children. We are also doing everything possible to ensure that there is water and sanitizers in schools before they re-open,’ Magoha said.
Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who accompanied Magoha on the tour, urged the national government to improve school infrastructure before reopening schools to prevent the spread of the virus.
