On Tuesday, August 25, a tragic incident occurred in Nakuru town when a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) evaded police arrest and crashed into two pedestrians, leaving one dead and the other injured.
A police chase had been underway, and the matatu sped off, hitting the pedestrians who were waiting to cross the road.
One of the victims died instantly, while the other was rushed to the Nakuru County Referral hospital with injuries.
According to recent statistics, there has been a 6.9 per cent increase in road accident deaths, with the majority of casualties being pedestrians, motorcyclists, and pillion passengers.
As part of measures to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the County Government of Nakuru had moved matatu operators from their previous bus terminus to Ziwani, causing an uproar among matatu operators who decried harassment by police officers.
So far, three pedestrians have been killed in chases between PSVs and police vehicles.
On the previous day, Monday, August 24, a police officer, Corporal Steven Kisavi, met his death in an accident along Lang'ata Road.
He was riding a motorcycle when he crashed into an Audi A4 station wagon and was dragged along the road for about 100 meters.
