Published on August 25, 2020, two people have died and 16 others are nursing injuries after two separate crashes at Shauri Moyo area along the Mombasa-Malindi highway.
A nephew of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho was among the injured, who were rushing to check on his sister involved in an earlier accident at the same spot.
The first accident involved a Toyota Landcruiser carrying Joho's relative, which collided head-on with a light truck, while the second accident involved Joho's nephew's car that collided with a matatu.
At Kilifi Referal Hospital, Joho's brother, businessman Abu Joho, was seen coordinating activities, and soon a helicopter arrived to airlift his son for specialized treatment.
Kilifi CEC for Health Charles Dadu confirmed that two of the victims had died, including a woman in the matatu to Mtwapa, while a child she was with was in a stable condition.
He added that three patients were in critical condition, one was airlifted to an unknown hospital outside Kilifi County, and 13 were stable and responding well to treatment.
According to Charles Dadu, the county government dispatched a total of ten ambulances to the scenes of the accidents, with eight provided by the county and two by Mombasa Cement.
Paul Muhonge, a Mombasa Cement ambulance driver, said that he was sent to the scene by his boss and discovered two people had already died upon arrival.
