Face masks have become a necessary part of our daily lives, but they can also cause acne. According to Audrey Masitsa, a skincare expert, acne is caused by blocked skin pores, which can be triggered by dead skin cells, oils, makeup products, dirt, and bacteria.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, our skin was able to breathe easily, and dirt and dead skin cells could fall off without any issues. However, face masks have now made it impossible for our skin to breathe, leading to clogged pores and mask acne.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent acne caused by face masks. Here are some tips:
1. Choose a breathable mask
Opt for masks made from breathable fabrics like cotton and silk. These materials are gentler on your skin and will reduce the chances of getting breakouts.
2. Take care of your skin
Before wearing a mask, ensure that you have properly taken care of your skin. This includes wearing oil-free makeup and skincare products that won't clog your pores and cause breakouts. If possible, avoid wearing makeup entirely.
3. Moisturize your skin
The constant rubbing of fabric against your skin can cause irritation and acne. A good moisturizer, free from harsh chemicals, will reduce the effects of friction.
4. Cleanse your face properly
Once you remove your face mask, ensure that you clean your face properly. An effective cleansing regimen will rid your face of any dirt and bacteria and unclog your pores. Choose a gentle cleanser, treat your active spots with acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide, and then moisturize your skin to keep it hydrated.
5. Avoid harsh skin treatments
Face masks can make your skin sensitive, and adding harsh skin treatments like chemical peels to your skincare regimen will only make your skin more sensitive and increase the likelihood of breakouts.
6. Wash your face mask after every use
Ensure that you wash your face mask after every use to remove any dirt and bacteria that might have accumulated on it.
