On Monday night, a group of robbers accosted a 30-year-old M-Pesa agent at Kapsoit trading centre in Ainamoi Constituency, Kericho County, as he was closing shop.
The assailants stabbed the agent in the stomach and bound his legs with a rope before fleeing with Sh160,000.
Kericho County Police Commander Silas Gichunge said police officers visited the crime scene at night and expect more details about the assailants and motive to emerge.
First responders described the agent's injuries, saying he had been stabbed in the stomach using a sharp object.
Local leaders, including Kapsoit Member of County Assembly Paul Chirchir, have called for thorough investigations and an urgent security meeting to address the rising levels of insecurity in the trading centre.
Chirchir also urged the County Commissioner to ensure the security agencies keep their ears to the ground and secure the lives and property of residents.
Rural Electrification Authority board member Mrs Beatrice Kemei blamed alcoholism and drug abuse for the rising crime level, appealing to the County Commissioner to address the issue.
