At least two people have lost their lives in a series of tragic accidents along the Kilifi-Mombasa Highway, with 16 others left nursing injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the first accident involved a head-on collision between a Toyota Landcruiser V8 vehicle and a canter.

Witnesses at the scene of the second accident claimed that the driver, a nephew of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, was responding to a distress call from his sister, who was involved in the first accident.

Tragically, Joho's nephew was also involved in an accident while attempting to rescue his sister and her family, colliding head-on with a 14-seater matatu.

Ambulances from the Kilifi County Government and Mombasa Cement Company responded quickly to the scene, rushing those injured to Kilifi Hospital.

Kilifi CEC Health Charles Dadu confirmed that two of the victims had succumbed to their injuries, including a mother who was traveling in the matatu to Mtwapa.

He added that three people were still in critical condition but were under close medical supervision, while 13 others were stable and responding well to treatment.

"At around 4.30 pm today, we received a phone call about a grisly road accident near Mombasa cement, and we sought emergency services to respond," Dadu said.

He also revealed that 10 ambulances were mobilized, including eight from the county and two from Mombasa Cement, to respond to the emergency.
