Published on August 24, 2020, two storms are expected to hit the US Gulf Coast in the coming days, forecasters said Monday.

Tropical Storm Laura, which killed at least 13 people when it struck Haiti and the Dominican Republic, was set to track just south of Cuba on Monday.

“Gradual strengthening is expected, and Laura is forecast to become a hurricane by early Tuesday,” the US National Hurricane Center said, predicting it would make landfall in the US state of Louisiana later in the week.

Heavy rain from the storm caused widespread destruction in the Dominican Republic, killing four people and leaving over one million without power.

Storm Laura also brought heavy rain to Haiti, killing nine people and causing homes to flood.

Energy companies suspended some oil and natural gas production in the Gulf as the weather deteriorated.
