On Monday, August 24, 2020, a devastating lorry crash occurred on the Webuye-Eldoret Highway, resulting in multiple fatalities.
A lorry carrying ballast from Webuye to Eldoret lost control and ploughed into traders and a matatu at the Kaburengu interchange, killing at least seven people, including the driver.
The accident occurred at around 2 p.m., and those injured were rushed to medical facilities in the area, including Webuye Sub County Hospital, for emergency treatment.
The section of the road has been marked as a black spot due to the high number of accidents witnessed at the interchange over the years.
Most of the casualties were women selling fruits and vegetables on the roadside, who had little time to flee from the lorry's collision path.
A bodaboda rider was also involved in the accident, as the lorry hit him before ramming into the matatu.
