On Monday, August 24, 2020, a matatu belonging to the Western Shuttle Sacco was involved in a fatal accident at Kaburengu along the Webuye-Eldoret highway.
According to reports, the lorry, which was ferrying ballast from Webuye to Eldoret, lost control and ploughed into traders and a stationary matatu, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including the driver of the lorry.
The accident occurred at around 2 p.m. and left 14 people nursing injuries, with the exact number of those in critical condition still scanty.
Reports indicate that the death toll rose to 10, but official police reports revealed seven casualties.
The section of the road has been marked as a black spot with a number of accidents witnessed at the interchange over the years.
Most of the casualties from the accident were women who were selling fruits and vegetables on the roadside and had little time to flee from the lorry's collision path.
A bodaboda rider was also part of the accident as the lorry hit him before ramming into the matatu that was stationary on the roadside.
Those injured in the grisly road accident were rushed to medical facilities in the area, including Webuye Sub County Hospital, for emergency treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were ferried to Webuye sub-county hospital mortuary.
According to a number of sources, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) had raised an alarm over the increased number of road accidents just a day before the incident.
