On August 24, 2020, the Kenyan Ministry of Sports unveiled protocols for the resumption of sports activities, which have been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry's Chief Administrative Secretary, Noor Hassan, announced that talks will be held with the Ministry of Health to explore ways to partner and help sports teams undertake COVID-19 tests, which have been made mandatory for any teams to get back to action.

The cost of testing has been identified as a challenge for sports federations and stakeholders, with a COVID-19 test ranging from Sh2,000 to Sh10,000 per person.

The Ministry has outlined six steps for the resumption of sports, including testing, individual training, and group training. The protocols have borrowed from guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, as well as from other countries that have resumed sporting activities.

Stakeholders have been given up to next week Monday to make their written responses, after which the Ministry will compile everything, amend where necessary, and roll out the program.

According to the protocols, individual training might be given a go-ahead from September 10, with group training of 10 allowed to start from September 17. Competitions might be given a go-ahead to resume by mid or end of October.

The protocols also recommend constant cleaning and disinfection of objects and equipment, as well as the use of masks and temperature checks on competition days.
