Businessman Chris Philip Obure and his bodyguard Robert John Ouko are set to spend the next 14 days in police custody after being charged with the murder of 28-year-old Kelvin Omwenga.

High Court Magistrate Derrick Kuto ordered the duo to be held at the Kilimani Police Station until he decides whether to grant them bail or allow them to be released on police bond.

The charges were brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) through Allan Mogere, who requested that the two men be held for 14 days to allow police to complete their investigations.

According to the court, the police want to question the two men and record statements from the four people who were with Omwenga on the night of August 22, 2020, at his home in the Galana Estate in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The police also want to examine the baton used in the murder and review CCTV footage showing Ouko entering and leaving Omwenga's home.

However, the defense team, led by Prof. P. L. O. Lumumba and Otieno Arum, opposed the request for the two men to be held for 14 days, saying that the investigation was not being conducted properly.

They claimed that the suspects had already cooperated with the police and were willing to assist in the investigation.

On August 24, 2020, Magistrate Kuto said he would deliver his ruling the following day at 4 pm.
