As Kenyans eagerly await the re-opening of schools, Education CS Prof. George Magoha has poured cold water on the speculation, stating that the government is still waiting for further advice from the Ministry of Health on the behavior of the coronavirus.
Speaking during an inspection at the Kitale National Polytechnic on August 24, 2020, Prof. Magoha emphasized that the Ministry is taking a cautious approach to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
While TVET institutions may open their doors to examination classes in September, Prof. Magoha clarified that the on-going inspection of middle-level colleges is aimed at assessing their preparedness.
He also allayed fears that teachers who do not register for community learning will be punished, stating that the exercise is voluntary and that teachers with clinical problems will not be allowed to participate.
Prof. Magoha explained that community learning is designed to cater for pupils and students who cannot access online classes, particularly those living in slums.
He emphasized that community teaching will not be syllabus-based and dismissed critics of the exercise as malicious individuals with little interest in the welfare of Kenyan children.
Prof. Magoha also criticized the World Health Organization for what he perceives as double standards, stating that the organization is asking countries to follow protocols while also urging African countries to open schools.
