Kenya Power, the country's main electricity distributor, is facing a significant challenge in collecting outstanding bills from its customers. As of December 31st, 2019, the company had a debt of KSh 5.2 Billion, with the majority of it categorized as accounts terminated for non-payment.

The company has split this debt into eight regions, with Nairobi accounting for the largest share of KSh 2.3 Billion. To address the issue, Kenya Power is stepping up its efforts to deal with defaulters, including working with security agencies to combat illegal connections and vandalism.

According to available figures, the debt status of Kenya Power was KSh 5.2 Billion as at December 31st, 2019. The company is now inviting bids for the supply of Debt Collection Services to assist in following up on defaulters who have not settled their electricity bills.

The tender, which commenced on August 19th, 2020, will close on September 2nd, 2020. This is not the first time the power company is taking measures to deal with defaulters, and it remains to be seen how effective this latest initiative will be.
