On Monday, August 24, 2020, ODM leader Raila Odinga made a significant statement regarding the COVID-19 funds scandal, distancing himself from family members and close allies who benefited from the pandemic funds.
Speaking to newsrooms, Raila called for a thorough and urgent audit of all the funds meant to fight the COVID-19 pandemic before presenting a water-tight case to court.
‘ODM will not defend anyone, including members or relatives and friends of its officials, found to have benefited from funds and other resources meant for fighting the Coronavirus pandemic,' Raila stated.
His statement comes after ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna faced criticism for a party statement reprimanding the media over the way it reported the multi-billion tender scandal at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).
Raila's statement seems to affirm what Sifuna had said earlier, with the party boss warning that political shouting will create more confusion and may end up bungling the investigations or covering up for the looters.
He cited past examples where ODM has succeeded in unmasking corruption cartels in government through a systematic approach, including the Arror and Kimwarer Dams Scandal, the sale of Grand Regency Hotel, and the 2009 maize scandal.
DP William Ruto had earlier accused ODM members of turning into Lords of corruption and defending COVID-19 thieves, but Raila's statement seems to counter this narrative.
