Kenya Sports Committee Releases Guidelines for Resuming Sporting Activities

On August 24, 2020, the Sports Advisory Committee in Kenya released new guidelines for the resumption of sporting activities, aimed at ensuring the safety of athletes and spectators amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking virtually during the release of the protocols, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed emphasized the importance of compliance with the guidelines, stating, "The guidelines that are ready should be shared with stakeholders for engagement to allow for a 7-day engagement."

The committee, chaired by Sports Ministry CAS Hassan Noor Hassan, has outlined various guidelines, including venue guidelines, indoor sports guidelines, pre-competition and post-competition guidelines.

Some of the key guidelines include:

  • Ensuring the dissemination of COVID-19 information to athletes, officials, and staff;
  • Appointing COVID-19 contact persons and response teams;
  • Providing hand washing facilities, sanitizers, and thermometers at training and competition sites;
  • Ensuring safe environments and regular cleaning and disinfection of venues;
  • Requiring officials, media personnel, and staff to undergo COVID-19 testing;
  • Prohibiting handshakes, hugs, and uniform exchanges;
  • Conducting body temperature checks at venue entrances;
  • Displaying COVID-19 measures signage at entrances and strategic locations.

The guidelines also emphasize the importance of social distancing in indoor sports, with a strict adherence to social distance protocols.
