Published on August 24, 2020, a West African delegation visiting Mali reported that the junta that seized power in the country wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years.
According to a source in the delegation, the junta has proposed a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state, with a body led by a soldier who will also serve as head of state.
The proposed government will be predominantly composed of soldiers, the source said, adding that ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita will be released and allowed to return to his home in Bamako.
Keita, who has been detained along with other political leaders since the coup on August 18, 2020, will also be permitted to travel abroad for treatment if he wishes, the source said.
Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, who has been detained with Keita at a military base outside the capital, will be moved to a secure residence in the city, the source added.
A junta official confirmed the decisions on the fate of Keita and Cisse, as well as the proposed three-year transition with a military president and a government mostly composed of soldiers.
