On August 23, 2020, a 28-year-old businessman, Kevin Omwenga, was shot dead in his residence in Kilimani, Nairobi, sparking a renewed focus on gun ownership and misuse in the area.
The incident has led to a probe by the Firearm Licensing Board, with the DCI chief, Fatuma Hadi, seeking details of the firearm believed to have been used in the killing.
Allegations have emerged that the area police had earlier recommended the board to withdraw the firearm after its licensed owner was involved in a gun drama at the B Club.
Two men, including businessman Chris Obure, have been arrested in connection with the shooting, with police recovering a Mini Ceska firearm with 13 bullets from one of the suspects.
According to a police report, the Ceska pistol with serial number B156623 was recovered from a safe box at an apartment in Kilimani, owned by Obure.
Robert Bodo Ouko, the prime suspect, has claimed that the incident was accidental, stating that the bullet discharged as Omwenga was handing over the weapon to him.
Other incidents of gun violence have plagued the once prestigious Kilimani neighborhood, including the killing of Careen Kipchumba, Monicah Kimani, and Sheila Murage, among others.
