Published on August 24, 2020, a 12-member Senate committee formed to broker a deal in the protracted battle for counties revenue allocation has hit a deadlock.
According to sources, members of Team Kenya and the rival team became obstinate, neither willing to cede ground. This stalemate has put cash-strapped counties in a precarious situation.
President Uhuru Kenyatta waded into the debate on Friday, stating that he would not interfere in the standoff, emphasizing the need for equity and fairness. "On this issue of the Senate, the money does not belong to Uhuru, the formula was originated by CRA, detailing how the money can be shared equitably in the Senate. Everyone must get what is just," he said.
Members of Team Kenya, comprising youthful lawmakers, have insisted on a win-win formula that does not disenfranchise any county. Key members of the team hail from counties that would have otherwise gained in the formula, including Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), and Mithika Linturi (Meru).
