On August 23, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto sparked controversy when he termed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leaders as the “Lords of Corruption”.
His statement came after ODM Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, defended the looting of Covid-19 billions, claiming that the prices of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) might have gone high due to the changes in dynamics where COVID-19 cases have been higher globally.
However, Ruto was quick to castigate the ODM leaders, saying that their defense of the Covid-19 grand larceny was not shocking and confirmed the worst of Kenyans' fears that their side of the handshake was never interested in the people's good but an opportunity to loot.
“The pretentious (former) Opposition, now turned Lords of corruption, attempted defence of the Covid19 grand larceny is NOT shocking. It confirms the worst of Kenyan’s fears that their side of handshake was never interested in the people’s good but opportunity to loot. What a shame,” wrote Ruto.
ODM had earlier asked for an audit report to ascertain the veracity of the claims, but Ruto saw this as an attempt to defend the theft.
