On August 23, 2020, the Ministry of Education announced that teachers' involvement in community learning is voluntary, as the ministry prepares to launch the program nationwide.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha dismissed reports that teachers who do not participate in the program will be denied their pay, stating that teachers will retain their salaries regardless of their participation.
Magoha emphasized that the Teachers Service Commission has identified the teachers who will participate in the program, and more teachers are encouraged to enroll.
The ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to roll out the program, targeting primary and secondary school learners.
Teachers will handle approximately fifteen learners in their local estates or villages, with lessons capped at four hours per day.
Community-based learning will follow COVID-19 containment measures, including social distancing, avoiding physical contact, and sanitizing.
