On August 23, 2020, the Kirinyaga County Government requested the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to conduct a week-long training for health workers on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) to combat the coronavirus.

The training targeted technical and non-technical staff from selected health facilities in Kirinyaga County, including Kerugoya Referral Hospital and several health centers.

According to Governor Anne Waiguru, the training aimed to build the capacity of health workers to protect themselves and patients from infections while at health facilities.

She noted that hospitals are places where many sick people congregate, and therefore, there is a great need to put measures in place to prevent infections from passing from one person to another.

KNH's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Evanson Kamuri, emphasized that Infection Prevention and Control is one of the most effective ways to combat the coronavirus, and it is essential to have a well-prepared and trained workforce.

Kirinyaga County Chief Officer, Dr. Muriithi Nyaga, stated that the health workers were trained on infection control principles and practices, including standard precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and waste disposal.
