On a day when the COVID-19 pandemic had forced many young people to stay indoors, a group of talented under-12 footballers from Kitui Village made history by winning the KYSD national title.
Young Achievers, coached by Hamza Kipkemoi, emerged victorious after a thrilling 2-1 win over Green Rhino FC in the final match held at the KYSD grounds in Nairobi's Majengo area.
The winning goal was scored by Kevin Kariuki, with Musa Muthuma equalizing for Green Rhino. However, Young Achievers' Kelvin Kariuki and Feisal Mwangi scored two goals each in the semi-finals to secure their spot in the final.
Speaking after the match, Coach Kipkemoi expressed his gratitude to the team for their hard work and dedication. 'We are grateful to our young players for their excellent performance in these matches, where we have managed to bring the title back to Kitui Village for the first time,' he said.
Coach Kipkemoi also praised the organizers of the tournament, KYSD, for hosting the event despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. 'It's a great achievement by KYSD to have organized these matches at this time, especially when many young people are not in school due to the pandemic,' he said.
