The Mombasa Tea Auction, a bi-weekly event, has been a crucial platform for tea traders and farmers in Kenya. On August 17th and 18th, 2020, the auction recorded 9 million kilograms offered for sale, a 9% increase from the 8.3 million kilograms offered during the same period in 2019.
However, this figure represents a 14% decrease from the 10.5 million kilograms offered during the previous sale, which took place on August 10th, 11th, and 12th, 2020.
Of the tea offered for sale, 7.9 million kilograms were sold, a 4% increase from the 7.6 million kilograms sold in the same period in 2019, but a slight decrease from the 9 million kilograms sold during the previous sale.
Notably, the tea auction sale recorded a slight increase in prices, with a kilogram selling at an average price of $1.94, compared to $1.90 for the same period last year and $1.88 during the previous sale.
