Published on August 22, 2020, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has pleaded not guilty to charges in a Mykonos court, following his arrest on the Greek island.
Maguire, 27, was arrested on Thursday after an alleged altercation with police officers in Mykonos. A court date has been set for Tuesday, but he can be represented by his lawyer and will now return home.
The England defender did not comment after leaving court on Saturday, but his lawyer told Sky News that he was a free man 'right now.'
Maguire was on holiday in Greece when the incident occurred. He joined Manchester United from Leicester for £80m in August 2019, a world record fee for a defender.
According to Greek police, officers tried to break up an altercation between two groups outside a bar, and the three foreigners, including Maguire, verbally abused and assaulted one of the officers.
After arriving at Mykonos police station, the three arrested individuals then 'strongly resisted, pushing and hitting three police officers,' and one of the detainees tried to offer money to avoid trial.
Manchester United released a statement saying that Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges and that it would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.
