On August 22, 2020, Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege received an unexpected gift from members of the Murang'a County Politics (MCP) WhatsApp group.
Each member contributed Ksh100, totaling Ksh1,200, to buy her favourite mandazi, known as Ndende, which she loved during her time in school at Kinyona shopping centre.
"Asanteni sana Murang'a County Politics (MCP) WhatsApp forum," she posted on her social media platforms, expressing gratitude to the group.
The members chose the gift because of Chege's fondness for the snack, which they remembered from her school days.
Julius Kamau, a member of the group, explained that the contributions were a show of residents' investment in their leaders.
Celebrating her birthday, Sabina expressed gratitude for her life journey, writing, "Thanking God for this far. I want to be like a sunflower so that even on darkest days I will stand tall and find the sunlight. Happy birthday to me,"
Earlier in the month, she had gifted her elder sister with a brand new car for her 56th birthday.
However, the woman representative has faced criticism for defending her stand on cutting trees at Gituamba Eucalyptus Plantation, arguing that the trees in Murang'a make the area colder and insecure.
She stated, "My opinion and that of many Kinyona residents is that the land needs to be put in a more productive manner with less negative impact to the people. The original idea of a resource centre and related Agriculture research institution should be upheld and the planting of the Eucalyptus be done away with henceforth."
