On August 22, 2020, a somber atmosphere prevailed at Nairobi's Holy Family Basilica, a stark contrast to the vibrant celebrations of the past 41 years. The prayer sanctuary was deserted, a first in 42 years, as the family opted for a private ceremony to mark the 42nd anniversary of Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's death.

Unlike the elaborate ceremonies of previous years, which were often attended by the Head of State and members of the Kenyatta family, this year's event was a low-key affair. The Parliament Grounds, usually the site of the celebrations, was empty, with only a handful of armed forces officers in ceremonial red uniform moving around the area.

According to a police officer, the officers were preparing for the private ceremony, which was described as a family gathering. The church ceremony, which has historically been held at the Holy Family Basilica, went ahead as usual, with a few believers attending to pray.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had announced last year that the family had decided to discontinue the elaborate public commemoration of the event, opting for a private ceremony instead. In a statement, he thanked the late presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki for their dedication to commemorating the memorial each year.

Mzee Kenyatta passed away on August 22, 1978, after suffering a heart attack at the State House in Mombasa, following prolonged health problems.
