On August 29, 2020, Kenya's biggest names will come together for a virtual music concert, Kenya Ni Yetu Live, sponsored by Stanbic Bank.
The concert, which will be aired on Kiss TV, Citizen TV, NTV, KTN, and K24, as well as the official website www.yetulive.com, will feature performances by Eric Wainaina, Sauti Sol, Suzanna Owiyo, Samidoh, H_art The Band, Sir Elvis, and Redfourth choir.
Elizabeth Njoroge, founder of Ghetto Classics, a music education program for over 500 children in Korogocho, spoke to Mpasho about the concert and the impact of COVID-19 on the music industry.
"I was very keen to be a part of it, it's a wonderful idea and it's something we can do as Kenyans to bring people together in these trying times," Njoroge said. "It's a wonderful expression of who we are as Kenyans to come together through music."
She noted that the music industry has been affected by the pandemic, as its existence relies on bringing people together to celebrate and hear art. However, the industry has adapted by finding ways to reach audiences through online platforms.
Despite the challenges, Ghetto Classics has continued to thrive, with Njoroge stating that the program has "always found ways to make things work out." During the pandemic, the program has been teaching in smaller groups due to social distancing rules.
