On August 22, 2020, Unity Homes celebrated a major milestone in the development of affordable housing in Kenya by handing over keys to the first 48 units of its Ksh4.5 billion project at Tatu City.
The project, which broke ground a year ago, is a British-Kenyan venture that aims to provide accessible housing to middle-income earners. The first 48 units are spread across four blocks, with 12 apartments each, and are priced at Ksh4.75 million (USD 44,000) per unit.
According to John Latham, Executive Director of Unity Homes, the project is driven by the desire to see as many Kenyans as possible access good housing in a safe, secure, and modern environment. 'One year after breaking ground, Unity Homes has achieved its goal of delivering accessibly priced housing,' he said.
Officiating at the key handover ceremony, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott praised Unity Homes for its success in delivering high-quality, accessible homes on schedule. 'Unity Homes have gone from strength to strength,' she said. 'The completion of the first collection of units here in Tatu City is a testament to the UK's partnership on affordable housing.'
Unity West homes are built with the modern family in mind, in an environment that allows children to flourish. The community enjoys 24-hour security, and a fitness centre, two-acre community park with jogging tracks and a playground, swimming pool, coffee shop, and a mini market are under development.
Evans Dimba, Kenya Country Head for Rendeavour, Tatu City's owner and developer, congratulated Unity Homes on its success in delivering high-quality, accessible homes on schedule. 'More than 5,000 homes are occupied or under construction and development at Tatu City, with prices to suit all incomes,' he said.
According to the National Housing Corporation, Kenya has a cumulative housing deficit of two million units growing by 200,000 units per year. The Unity Homes project is contributing to the Government's Big 4 Agenda goal of creating 500,000 new homes by 2022.
