Published on August 22, 2020, a report by the National Assembly Committee on Labour and Social Services revealed the challenges faced by some Kazi Mtaani workers in receiving their payments.

The programme, which entails youth being hired for 11 days at a rate of Sh455 per day, has been marred with pay hitches. The government had decided to use M-Pesa to pay the young people in a convenient way, reducing the risk of handling cash during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, some workers have been unable to receive their payments due to errors in their mobile money details. According to the report, some youth had blocked or frozen their numbers due to having taken Fuliza loans from Safaricom, while others used IDs belonging to their relatives, resulting in pay delays.

“Some youth had blocked or frozen numbers due to having taken Fuliza loan from Safaricom,” the report says. “Some used IDs that belong to other family members. The challenge is that the details provided do not match their ID numbers, resulting in pay delay.”

Principal Secretary Charles Hinga assured workers that the problem had been identified and was being addressed.
