On August 22, 2020, the DCI issued a warning to alert Kenyans to a scam involving missed calls from international numbers.

The scam, known as Wangiri, relies on people's curiosity to return missed calls from unfamiliar numbers, resulting in exorbitant charges for listening to pre-recorded messages.

According to the DCI, the Wangiri scam is a genuinely international scam, with victims distributed across the world.

DCI warned that calls to Wangiri numbers will often result in a charge being incurred, encouraging the fraudster to generate more missed calls to customers who choose to call back.

DCI advised Kenyans to report the numbers to their telecom carrier and refrain from calling them back.

It's essential to note that the fraudster has generated a missed call to a whole range of mobile numbers, including yours, and not specifically targeted you.

Therefore, we recommend that you don't return calls to international numbers that you don't recognise.

Instead, call your mobile service provider, explain the situation, and help them block some of these numbers.
