On August 21, 2020, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) launched a countrywide market surveillance operation that led to the seizure of plastic pipes and construction materials worth ten million Kenya shillings from five companies.
The affected companies, including Kikuyu Pipes and Fitting Centre, Yuanyang Plastic Company Ltd., Doer Industrial Company Ltd., Vintz Industries, and Kansun Pipe Ltd., have been instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected plastic pipes and take corrective actions to bring their production processes under control.
KEBS has suspended the Standardization Mark permits of the affected products and will destroy the seized products at the expense of the owners, in addition to any other legal action as provided under the law.
"It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure continued product compliance to set Standards," said Lt Col (Rtd.) Bernard Njiraini, Managing Director, KEBS. "Processing, manufacturing, stocking, and/or offering for sale of substandard goods or products that do not comply with set Standards is prohibited by the Laws of Kenya under the Standards Act Chapter 496."
