On August 21, 2020, Airtel Africa announced a partnership with Money Gram International, a leading American money transfer company, to revolutionize the way its 19 million customers receive money transfers.
Under this new partnership, customers will have immediate access to transferred funds, which can be used to pay utilities or converted to cash at any of Airtel Africa's branches.
Airtel Africa's CEO, Raghunath Mandava, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, 'We are delighted to work with MoneyGram to provide millions of customers with fast, secure and convenient options to receive and send money as well as access their funds from a vast distribution of exclusive kiosks, agents and branches at their convenience.'
John Gelly, Head of Money Gram Africa, noted that the partnership with Airtel is aimed at expanding the firm's mobile wallet capabilities and building momentum in the continent.
The services are expected to be enabled this year, subject to local regulatory approvals. Airtel money boasts of more than 100 million subscribers in the continent, with a presence in 14 countries. Moneygram international enables cross-border P2P payments and money transfers in over 200 countries.
