On August 21, 2020, the ESL One Cologne Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament kicked off, defying the odds of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled for July, the event was postponed to August and eventually moved online, raising concerns about the authenticity of the experience. However, ESL proved that with creativity and dedication, the essence of the tournament could still be conveyed to fans worldwide.
As the teams battled it out for the $500,000 prize pool, fans were treated to a visually stunning setup, complete with a real-world desk, in-person panelists, and call-ins on a CGI wall. The studio was arranged professionally, impressing viewers and setting a new standard for online tournaments.
