On August 19, 2020, a deadly clash erupted in Kamulu, Nairobi, between two rival groups of sand sellers, resulting in the death of one man and injuring several others.
The fight, which started as a dispute over territories, escalated into a violent confrontation, with members of one group using crude weapons against the other.
Several people were left injured, with some sustaining deep cuts and lying in pools of blood.
The incident caused a huge traffic snarl-up on the Kangundo road, with local residents accusing the police of laxity in dealing with the situation.
Residents also accused the sand sellers of being behind a series of robberies in the area, claiming that they were being protected by the police.
