The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Capital Markets Authority (CMA), and the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB) have announced the start of the 2020 FiRe Awards.

Private sector firms have until September 4, 2020, to submit their financial reports for evaluation, while public sector companies have until October 7, 2020.

The awards ceremony is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2021.

This year's event focuses on how businesses and livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizations are being recognized for their coping strategies in a constrained business environment and reduced incomes.

The theme of this year's award is 'Financial Reporting Excellence in a Disruptive Environment.'

ICPAK Chief Executive Edwin Makori emphasized the importance of public finances being safeguarded by those entrusted with public resources.

Capital Markets Authority Acting Chief Executive Wyckliffe Shamiah noted that good reporting and corporate governance practices are vital for Kenya's reputation as an ideal destination for investors and firms in Africa.

CRDB Bank Plc, Tanzania, was the overall winner of the FiRe awards last year.

Notable Kenyan firms that featured prominently in various categories include NIC Bank, Equity Bank, Safaricom, Bamburi Cement, UAP Insurance, KenGen, KTDA, Stima Sacco, and Kenya Bankers Association.
