On Thursday morning, detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) conducted a raid on the homes and offices of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru in Nairobi and Kirinyaga.

According to a statement released by EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak, the agency was investigating allegations that the governor and other officials of the County Government of Kirinyaga were irregularly paid travel allowances of Sh23 million.

The monies were reportedly spent on non-existent trips, and the EACC was in the process of establishing whether the trips were actually undertaken and whether the documents were genuine.

Waiguru's homes, located at Kihingo Village International School of Kenya in Nairobi's Kitusuru and another in Kerugoya, were among those raided by the EACC sleuths.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the EACC sleuths had been granted access to several offices and residences to retrieve information that may be useful to the investigation.

Waiguru had previously faced impeachment proceedings in June, which she survived after an 11-member Senate ad-hoc committee cleared her of all the allegations levelled against her by the members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly.
