On August 9, 2020, a significant theft occurred at the Kenya Police Service's central store in Industrial Area, Nairobi. The stolen items were 1,826 pairs of men's high ankle boots and 398 pairs of women's high ankle boots, valued at Sh6,454,342.
Denice Onyango Okong'o, a policeman, was charged with breaking into the building and stealing the boots. He is accused of committing the offence with a Kenya Prisons Service officer, Naftali Muturi Wahome, who was charged over the same theft on Monday, August 17, 2020.
Okong'o works at the depot along Likoni road, where the theft occurred. A policeman who was on night guard duty with Okong'o is being sought over the same offence.
Prisons officer Naftali Muturi Wahome was allegedly found with the stolen shoes and material for making police uniforms at his house in the Industrial Area remand and allocation prison on Saturday, August 15, 2020. He told investigators that he received the items from Okong'o.
Okong'o was freed on a Sh1 million bond and an alternative cash bail of Sh300,000. The case will be mentioned on September 2, 2020.
