At a recent Street University webinar, experts gathered to discuss the importance of networking in today's digital age. According to personal network analyst Lorraine Kirigia, networking is not just about exchanging business cards, but about building relationships and socialising with others.

Ms. Kirigia emphasized that different ages are driven by different assets, and today, it is our networks and relationships that matter most. She stressed the need to classify networks well to avoid misplaced expectations and to focus on building relationships first.

Marketing Africa boss William Kalombo and communication expert Dr. Joan Mutua also highlighted the importance of building relationships and socialising in networking. They noted that socialising and networking are not the same thing, and that one must take the time to get to know people before expecting to build a network.

Image and perception management guru Oladele Ogunlana shared a personal anecdote about a time when he was trying to network with high-powered individuals. He learned that simply exchanging business cards was not enough, and that he needed to take the time to socialise and build relationships with them.

Guinness Nigeria Plc managing director Baker Magunda also shared his insights on networking, noting that many people make the mistake of only networking with those they perceive to be high and mighty. He emphasized the importance of building relationships with people from all walks of life, as they may hold the key to one's success in the future.

So, what are the golden rules of networking? According to Mr. Magunda, relationships are the easiest way to build sure networks. He emphasized the importance of following up with contacts within 48 hours, and of using email as the best medium for initial communication. He also noted that simply having someone's business card does not mean you have their trust or friendship, and that one must take the time to build relationships and socialise with others.

As the experts concluded, effective networking requires more than just exchanging business cards; it demands building genuine relationships and socialising with others. By following these golden rules, one can build a strong network and achieve success in their personal and professional lives.
