Published on August 10, 2020, Dangote Cement is gearing up to test its $90 million gas-fired power plant in Mtwara, southern Tanzania, after a prolonged delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The plant, expected to reduce the company's reliance on imported coal and diesel, has faced several setbacks, including mechanical failures and delayed maintenance.
According to Albert Corcos, Dangote Tanzania country manager, the commissioning of the first turbine was delayed due to Covid-19-related disruptions in India, where the plant was conceived and equipment produced.
Plant commissioning is set to start this month, with a target completion date of November.
Despite the challenges, Dangote Cement reported a decline in cement production for the first six months of this year, selling 526,000 tonnes of cement, a four percent decrease from the same period last year.
