On August 7, 2020, a devastating plane crash occurred at Calicut airport in the southern state of Kerala, India, claiming the lives of at least 16 people.
A Boeing 737, en route from Dubai, was carrying 190 people, mostly Indians who were stranded in the United Arab Emirates due to the coronavirus outbreak.
According to reports, the plane was attempting to land at the airport for the second time after the first attempt was aborted due to heavy monsoon-season rainfall.
Aviation officials confirmed that at least 16 people were dead, with 15 others in critical condition, and many more injured.
Rescue operations were carried out, and survivors were taken to hospitals in Calicut and Malappuram.
India's Civil Aviation Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, stated that the plane overshot the runway in rainy conditions and plunged down a 35ft slope before breaking in two.
Indian President Narendra Modi condoled with the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished a quick recovery to the injured.
