Italian legend Andrea Pirlo has been appointed as the new coach of Juventus, the Italian Serie A club confirmed on August 8, 2020.

Pirlo's appointment came just hours after Juventus sacked coach Maurizio Sarri, following the team's elimination from the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 on August 7, 2020.

According to a statement by Juventus, Pirlo's appointment is based on the belief that he has what it takes to lead the team to new successes.

As a player, Pirlo had a legendary career with Juventus, winning numerous titles including the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup in 2006.

He signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2022, and will be tasked with leading the team to their first Champions League title since 1996.

Former coach Sarri was dismissed despite leading Juventus to the Serie A title two weeks ago, their ninth in a row.

He had been under pressure after the team's failure to match last season's quarter-finals performance in the Champions League.
