On August 8, 2020, a tense scene unfolded in Kakamega Town as Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe's motorcade was met with a barrage of stones.

The incident occurred after area governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, allegedly ordered the demolition of business stalls in the area to pave the way for Kagwe's visit.

According to eyewitnesses, Oparanya had arrived at his office early in the morning to prepare for the meeting with Kagwe, which was scheduled to take place at the governor's office.

However, the meeting was disrupted when hundreds of youth pelted Kagwe's procession with stones, forcing it to reroute to the Mumias Level 4 Hospital.

At the time, Oparanya had already left his office for Mumias Hospital, leaving behind a trail of destruction and anger among the residents.

One trader expressed the frustration of the residents, saying, 'We don't understand how our stalls stop the cabinet secretary from dispensing his duties when he tours Kakamega.'
