On August 8, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the nation via a video link from Masaai Mara, where he spoke with Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, Narok Governor Samuel Ole Tunai, and marathoner Eliud Kipchoge.
President Kenyatta emphasized that the tourism sector, severely impacted by COVID-19, is now on a path to recovery. He encouraged Kenyans to take advantage of the opportunity to travel within the country, assuring them that their safety is guaranteed.
"All those who have always longed for an opportunity to travel, this is your opportunity," President Kenyatta said.
He attributed the country's decision not to impose a second lockdown to the need to revitalize the economy, particularly the tourism sector. The President also highlighted the importance of adhering to COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of both Kenyans and international tourists.
With the Kenya airspace now open, President Kenyatta expressed confidence that the situation will continue to improve as flights resume and international tourists visit the country.
"And now that we have opened up our skies and flights are coming, we welcome all those who choose to come and all those who choose to obey the protocols that we have put in place to come and partake with us and enjoy the beauty of this wonderful land," he said.
