On August 8, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe led a team to Kakamega County to evaluate the county's efforts in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

During his visit, Kagwe commended Kisii County for its preparations, which included establishing five isolation facilities with 386 beds and acquiring 41 beds for intensive care patients.

The Kenya Medical Training College in Kisii, being used as a quarantine facility, has 400 beds, Kagwe noted.

Kisii County Governor James Ongwae stated that the county had 300 beds at isolation centers and planned to acquire 100 more. He also promised to pay health workers' salaries by the following Tuesday.

Health workers in Kisii County have been on strike since May, demanding salary arrears. Similar strikes have been observed in Homa Bay and Siaya counties, with health workers in Siaya issuing a notice to strike.
