The COVID-19 pandemic has not hindered the democratic process at Gor Mahia, as the club held virtual elections on Saturday, August 8, 2020. The elections were conducted in a different format compared to the 2016 exercise, with voters casting their ballots online.
According to Electoral Board Chairman Henry Ogoye, all 556 voters had received their secret codes ahead of the exercise. The voting process was expected to be completed in a record five minutes, with the results streamed live on a big screen.
"All the voters have been coded and the link shall be sent at 10am. The system will be connected to a big screen which shall stream live the voting and tallying. As earlier stated we shall be through in a record five minutes. We have done voters education and followed the club constitution. Our work finishes after we declare the winners," said Ogoye.
The elections were held to fill two key positions: vice chairperson and treasurer. Incumbent Ambrose Rachier and Lolwe TV owner Sam Ochola were elected unopposed as Chairman and Secretary general respectively. The vice chairperson post pitted incumbent Francis Wasuna against outgoing treasurer Sally Bollo, while a fierce contest was expected in the treasurer post.
Despite a suit filed by seven fans at the Sports Dispute Tribunal seeking to stop the exercise, the elections went ahead. The SDT had fixed the case for mention on August 18 for further directions.
