JKUAT has announced a new advisory regarding the reopening of learning institutions in January 2021. The institution has directed students to collect their belongings from residential halls between August 17 and 28.
According to Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Kinyua, students have 12 days to pick up their property from the hostels, starting from August 17. This decision was made in line with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of Coronavirus.
JKUAT has stated that hotel staff will be available to clear students on normal working hours, except on weekends. However, students are warned that the institution will not be responsible for their belongings not collected after the deadline.
Students are also urged to adhere to Covid-19 measures, including sanitizing, social distancing, and wearing masks.
Meanwhile, in Kakamega County, students are counting losses after residents broke into various hostels outside campus premises and stole household goods. The affected areas include Milimani, Kefinco, Koromatangi, and Showground estates.
It is alleged that the gangs break into households even during the day, targeting students who left their property in the hands of caretakers and landlords.
On July 30, Education CS George Magoha announced that colleges and universities would remain closed until January 2021, citing that most institutions were not well prepared to enforce prevention measures.
