On August 7, 2020, a dramatic scene unfolded in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood as New York Police Department officers surrounded the apartment of Derrick Ingram, a 28-year-old organizer of the Black Lives Matter protests.
With a police helicopter patrolling overhead, officers banged on Ingram's door, and police dogs waited in the hallway. The street outside was closed off by roughly two dozen police vehicles and dozens of officers, including some wearing riot gear.
Black Lives Matter supporters had gathered with bullhorns and cameras to protest what appeared to be Ingram's imminent arrest. The tense standoff continued for several hours as Ingram talked to lawyers via Zoom and communicated with the outside world over the Instagram video.
