Published on August 8, 2020, the Kenya National Highway Authority's (KENHA) decision to rename two rivers along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway has sparked widespread anger among residents and conservationists.

The authority has renamed River Karati as Delamere and Malewa as Gilgil, much to the dismay of those who value the rivers' historical names.

Area leaders have termed the act illegal, with Enock Kiminta, the chair of Lake Naivasha Water Resource Users Association, expressing shock at the sudden change.

“KENHA has decided to rename these two rivers whose names have historical meanings. We will be engaging them to find the motive behind it,” Kiminta said.
