State-Owned Sugar Mills to be Leased to Private Investors

On August 7, 2020, the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Co-operatives appointed an interim management committee to oversee the leasing of five state-owned sugar mills to private investors.

The mills in question include Nzoia Sugar Company, Chemelil Sugar Company, Miwani Sugar Company, Muhoroni Sugar Company, and South Nyanza Sugar Company.

The committee, led by Chairperson Anne Mukami Nyaga, consists of eight members, including Anthony Murithi, Grace Agili, Michael Wanjala, Stephen Ligawa, Harun Kirui, Francis Ooko, Gabriel Nyangweso, and Rosemary Owino, who serves as Secretary.

The committee's primary responsibility is to oversee the operations of the sugar mills during the transition period before the eventual takeover by the successful bidders.
