Kenya's Senate has called for a special audit of billions of shillings allocated to fight the Covid-19 pandemic following allegations of mismanagement and corruption.

According to a letter dated August 4, 2020, Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye requested Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o to undertake the audit and submit an independent report by September 4, 2020.

The audit is expected to cover the period from March 13 to July 31 and scrutinize procurement and purchases made by the Health Ministry and its agencies.

The Senate committee, chaired by Nominated Senator Sylvia Kasanga Mueni, wants to determine whether the funding from the national government was spent in accordance with approved work, procurement, and training plans.

Health PS Susan Mochache was scheduled to appear before the Senate Health Committee on Thursday but failed to do so.

The audit comes as the National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee prepares to summon top officials from the ministry over the expenditure of the coronavirus cash given by development partners from around the globe.
